Schools Plane Making Challenge

Every year British Woodworking invites schools to enter the Plane Making Challenge, sponsored by Axminster Tool Centre. We provide each school with plans and instructions, fittings for any students who will be taking part, and three free blades per class so that the best three can be entered into our annual competition. More blades are available at £2.00 plus p&p each.

The idea is to show students that they can make a tool they can use. The challenge aims to promote self-reliance and the use of hand tools. Hopefully the small plane each student makes will be kept for years to come as a reminder of what they have achieved. Because most people have never seen a wooden plane before, there is nothing to compare, and many visitors to our exhibition of entries have thought the schoolchildren's planes are professionally made, and even for sale.

Each participating school/class is invited to enter their three best planes by August 2012 for our competition. They will be judged by professional planemakers, and with the support of Axminster Tool Centre we will be awarding prizes for the best individual plane and for the best three from any one school.
